【PIano Teacher】Music Does Not Matter Who You Are

About Kyle

Kyle is gentle and quiet, but as long as he mentions music, no matter it is an appreciation of works or a creation of music, he becomes eloquent with his eyes flashing a glimpse of his enthusiasm for music - especially in the aspect of composition. Kyle graduated from Washington State University's Department of Music Creation and has produced different types of music, including chamber music, solo and orchestral works. His first orchestral work, The Glory Fafare, was selected by the Lake Union Civic Orchestra as the opening work of their 20th-anniversary concert in Seattle in 2015.

In addition to his outstanding achievements in music creation, Kyle's piano experience is also rich. During his time in the music creation department of Washington State University, he also majored in piano performance. He was the student of the famous piano professor Gerald Berthiaume, who is well versed in the performance of piano performances in various musical periods. Kyle could express the techniques, from the rigorous Baroque and classical music period to the modern music with the changing style and ghosts, in a perfect way, and can apply their skills to teaching with corresponding music knowledge.

How to teach composition? Kyle believes that it is important to inspire students to compose music. The inspiration develops their thinking, and Kyle understands their thoughts and ideas. "I have ideas but that are ideas of the students. I should not impose the ideas or styles on students.” It’s not easy to inspire students to induce musical ideas, but because of Kyle’s background in graduating from the music creation department, with a good understanding of the style of each musical period, Kyle can also systematically assist students to create.

Because of the wide range of customers on the Toby platform, Kyle has access to students of different classes and ages. This is a challenge for Kyle. Comparing to the usual contact with the piano, the scope of the students is completely different. The current number of students received on the Toby platform is about 80% of all his students, including adult students from different occupations and backgrounds. This surprised Kyle, "I did not think of reaching these unusual students!"

Upon receipt of students’ requests for quotation, Kyle will send a personal resume with videos of his own performances as a reference, so that the students can understand the style of the class.  Kyle sets different learning progress to students according to their ability and availability.
