2. Frequently Asked Questions

I woke up with red, swollen, and itchy skin. Could it be caused by bed bug bites?

There are several possible causes, including bed bugs, flying insects, mosquitoes, or ticks. If the irritation persists for several days and occurs mainly at night while sleeping, bed bugs are the more likely cause.

How can I confirm if there are bed bugs at home? Do they jump?

Bed bugs are blood-feeding insects:

  • Nymphs (young bed bugs) are small, grayish-white, and difficult to see.
  • Adult bed bugs are reddish-brown, about the size of an apple seed, and move quickly.
  • Bed bugs do not jump; they move by crawling.

What is the difference between bed bugs, wood bugs, and stink bugs?

They are all the same species, referred to by different names. Since bed bugs commonly hide in mattresses and bed frames, they are often called “bed bugs” or “wood bugs.” Due to their odor-producing glands, they are also known as “stink bugs.”

Are bed bug foggers or powders effective?

  • Foggers (smoke bombs) are ineffective against bed bugs as they mainly target fleas and mosquitoes. Moreover, foggers only disperse chemicals upwards and do not penetrate deep crevices where bed bugs hide. Instead of killing them, foggers may cause bed bugs to spread further, increasing their numbers and resistance to treatment.
  • Bed bug powders have limited effectiveness, primarily targeting nymphs (young bed bugs) and requiring a long time to take effect. Improper use of toxic insecticide powders can also be extremely dangerous.

What precautions should I take if I suspect a bed bug infestation?

  • Prevent spreading: Do not move items or clutter extensively.
  • Isolate unaffected items: Pack clothing and belongings without signs of bed bugs into thick garbage bags and seal them tightly.
  • Reduce further infestation risks:
    • Store old or replacement clothing in thick garbage bags. Only wear sealed and isolated clothing to avoid spreading bed bugs.
    • When washing bagged clothing, only open the bags right before washing, using hot water (above 70°C for at least 30 seconds).
    • Winter clothing, thick fabrics, and comforters should be professionally cleaned at a laundromat.
  • Contact a professional pest control service for an on-site inspection and treatment quote.

Can a single pest control treatment completely eliminate bed bugs?

Bed bugs reproduce rapidly, with eggs hatching into nymphs in about 7 days. Since insecticides cannot immediately destroy eggs hidden in crevices, Toby’s bed bug treatment includes two sessions, spaced 10-14 days apart, to ensure comprehensive eradication. The chemicals used are safe for humans and pets. Additionally, the service includes a 180-day free follow-up maintenance period.

How should I prepare before bed bug treatment?

  1. Pack and seal clothing and belongings that do not show signs of bed bug infestation.
  2. Empty closets, bookshelves, and under-bed storage to allow thorough pesticide application.
  3. Secure kitchenware and food items before treatment.
